India is moving towards a future where development and environmental responsibility go hand in hand. Solar energy is an important part of this journey. With abundant sunlight across our nation, we have a tremendous opportunity to harness the power of the Sun for the benefit of every citizen.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government of India has placed renewable energy at the centre of its energy-transition efforts. India’s solar capacity has grown substantially over the past decade. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, cumulative installed solar capacity reached 168.04 GW as of 31 August 2026.
Empowering Every Home Through Solar
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in February 2024, aims to support rooftop solar installations in one crore households, with a total financial outlay of ₹75,021 crore. The programme is designed to expand household participation in clean energy and provide financial assistance for eligible residential rooftop solar systems.
A solar-powered home is more than a source of electricity. It represents the participation of ordinary citizens in building a cleaner and more sustainable India.
Solar Energy for Our Farmers
Our farmers are also important partners in India’s renewable-energy journey. Through PM-KUSUM, solar power is being promoted for agricultural applications, including standalone solar pumps and the solarisation of existing agricultural pumps. The scheme also provides for decentralised renewable-energy power plants.
Building a Strong Solar Ecosystem
India’s solar journey is also creating opportunities in manufacturing, technology, research, installation and skilled employment. Policies supporting domestic solar manufacturing and approved solar PV models and manufacturers are part of efforts to strengthen the country’s renewable-energy ecosystem.
